“Physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come” (1 Timothy 4:7-8, NIV).

In this section of passage, Paul shares with Timothy the important teaching that needs to be passed on to the brothers and sisters in Christ. The importance of training in godliness. Many of us desire to know the Lord on a deeper level and to know His Word, but we don’t always know what steps to take. Not many people know this about me, but I was once upon a time a competitive body builder. For years my life was structured around training. Anything that would distract from the goal would be removed from my life. Sacrifices had to be made in order to build the physique that would win that crown.

Although this physical training had it’s benefits, it was the discipline and daily routine that showed the progress and fruits of my labor. We train for a higher crown, and a greater purpose. When applying this same method to the Word of God and growing in relationship with Him, training principles are the same. It all comes down to discipline.

Discipline is the quality of being able to behave and work in a controlled way. When you discipline yourself you are cultivating healthy habits that strengthen your walk with the Lord. It takes endurance. You must be steadfast, and you may have to sacrifice. Implementing just a few of these practices daily will help you to grow in spiritual discipline, and in turn, bear fruit for the Lord.

Daily Practices

  • Study your Bible: this might be in a structured study or on your own. Either way, have a plan. (2 Timothy 3:16–17)
  • Commit key passages to memory to remind yourself of when needed in different circumstances. (Joshua 1:8)
  • PRAY! Have designated times set aside to pray daily without distractions, in external silence, so you might hear what is being spoken to you. (Psalm 5:1-3, Mark 1:3-5)
  • Fasting (Matthew 6:16-18)
  • Be generous (Matthew 25:35-40)
  • Have fellowship with others (Hebrews 10: 24-25)
  • Practice Gratitude and being thankful for all your blessings. (Philippians 4:8)
  • Keep a journal of your prayers and reflect on how they have been answered.

That’s awesome! Keep it up. Focusing on a couple disciplines at a time and growing them is always helpful.
